Year 1: Cycle 3: Week 2

~ Day 1: mural(No.106) ~

WORDPIC of the DAY:mural‘ ~ This stunning mural – on one of the grand halls of the Gare d’Austerlitz in Paris if I remember correctly – is so high it’s almost on the ceiling. The colours are beautiful and the size is very impressive. The ladies buying tickets are almost insignificant in comparison – did you see them?

VOCABULARY:
mural‘ ~ This is quite simply a painting on a wall. Or it could be on a ceiling and is normally painted directly onto the wall. Impressive language point: ‘mur’ is French for wall. Thank you 😀

~ Day 2: in bloom / blooming (No.107) ~

WORDPICs of the DAY:in bloom / blooming‘ ~ Where I live I’m lucky that the town decorates the streets with beautiful flowers in bloom. Indeed, in summer, flowers are blooming everywhere… As long as you remember to water them.

VOCABULARYs:in bloom / blooming‘ ~When flowers – or plants – are in bloom, or blooming, there are flowers. It’s as simple as that. And always a pleasure.

~ Day 3: resist (No.108) ~

WORDPIC of the DAY:resist‘ ~ The French government and the citizens of France are determined to stand strong and resist attacks on their principles and values, wherever they may come from.

VOCABULARY:
resist‘ ~To withstand, strive against, or oppose: to resist infection; to resist temptation. To fight against (something): to try to stop or prevent (something). To remain strong against the force or effect of something; to not give in.

~ Day 4: Brexit (No.109) ~

WORDPIC of the DAY:Brexit‘ ~ I’m British, having been born in Edinburgh, in Scotland, but I’ve lived in France for over 20 years. I tried to vote on the Brexit question but I was told that I had lived abroad for too long. Maybe I’m not as British as I thought. And would I vote to stay in the European Union or to leave? What do you think?!

VOCABULARY: Brexit‘ ~ This is a combination of the words ‘Britain’ and ‘exit’. It refers to the vote in the UK, today, as I write on 23 June, 2016, on whether to stay in the European Union… or to leave. A similar word is ‘Grexit’, which was used when Greece was close to leaving the European Union because of their debt crisis.

 ~ Day 5: dress / bare (No.110) ~

WORDPICs of the DAY:dress / bare‘ ~ In Paris, where I work and sometimes live, there are some areas which are full of dress shops. But these are shops where they make dresses and sell them to other shops. Sometimes you see funny things in their windows, like this beautiful pink dress next to a bare bottom!

VOCABULARY: dress‘ ~ A dress is a piece of clothing for women or girls that covers the top of the body and hangs down over the legs. It can also be a verb which means ‘to put on clothes’; ‘bare‘ ~ You are bare if you are not covered by clothes. The dummy in this picture is bare!

 ~ Day 6: empty / full (No.111) ~

WORDPICs of the DAY:empty / full‘ ~ This is a picture of two empty paper cups on a table in a café in Paris. Today, as I write this, my country, the United Kingdom, voted to leave the European Union. Could these two cups represent the UK and Europe now? Or maybe the cups should both be full – what do you think?!

VOCABULARY:empty‘ ~ If something is empty, it doesn’t have anything in it. Paper cups can be empty, like in this picture, but you can also talk about empty streets (with no people), empty minds (with no thoughts) and even empty promises (promises which are not worth anything)! ‘full‘ ~ The opposite of empty is full – when a container or space holds as much of something as possible.

~ Day 7: flag (No.112) ~

WORDPIC of the DAY:flag‘ ~ My son was born and lives in France. BUT his father (me) is British and his mother is Spanish. Here we are going to watch a football match during the European Championship which is in France this year. My son is holding a French flag and I am holding a British flag, called the Union Jack. It is strange, but the United Kingdom does not have one football team, it has four: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and they all have different flags!

VOCABULARY: flag‘ ~ A flag is a piece of cloth with a special design and special colours. It is often fixed to a pole and is a symbol of a country or group or a football team like in the picture!
